How to Recover an Unsaved Document

Losing an unsaved document is gut-wrenching, but most modern apps keep autosaved or temporary copies in the background. Acting quickly and knowing where to look gives you a strong chance of recovery.

Steps

  1. Reopen the app. Launch the program again — Word, Excel and many editors show a 'Document Recovery' pane with recovered files on restart.
  2. Check autosave/version history. In Office, go to File → Info → Manage Document → Recover Unsaved Documents. In Google Docs, use File → Version history.
  3. Search temp files. Search your system for the file extension (e.g. .asd for Word, .tmp) or check the AutoRecovery folder noted in the app's save settings.
  4. Look in the cloud. If the file syncs to OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox, open the web version and restore a previous version.
  5. Save immediately. When you find the content, copy it into a fresh document and save right away to a known location.

Tips

  • Turn on autosave and set the recovery interval to 1–5 minutes in the app's options.
  • Use a cloud-synced folder so version history is always available.
