How to Check Tyre Pressure
By the Super Simple Digital Tools Team · Updated June 2026 · Easy · 10 minutes
Correct tyre pressure improves fuel economy, handling and safety, and makes tyres last longer. It takes two minutes with a gauge, and most petrol stations have a free air pump.
Steps
- Find the right pressure. Look for the recommended PSI on a sticker inside the driver's door frame or in your owner's manual — not the number on the tyre itself.
- Check when cold. Measure before driving far, as warm tyres read higher. If you've driven a while, allow 30 minutes to cool.
- Read the gauge. Unscrew the valve cap and press the gauge firmly onto the valve until the hiss stops, then read the pressure.
- Add or release air. Use the pump to add air, checking often. To release air, press the small pin in the centre of the valve briefly.
- Replace the caps. Recheck all four tyres (and ideally the spare), then screw the valve caps back on.
Tips
- Check pressure at least monthly and before long trips.
- Increase pressure slightly when carrying heavy loads — see the manual for the higher figure.
