How to Cancel a Subscription

Forgotten subscriptions quietly drain money every month. Cancelling is usually simple, but the method depends on where you signed up — and you'll want proof that the charges have actually stopped.

Steps

  1. Find the source. Check your bank or card statement for the merchant name and whether you were billed via the company directly, an app store, or PayPal.
  2. Cancel in the right place. App Store/Google Play subscriptions are cancelled in your device's subscription settings — not in the app itself. Others cancel in the account's billing page.
  3. Follow the flow to the end. Click through every confirmation screen until you see explicit wording that the subscription is cancelled or 'will not renew'.
  4. Save the confirmation. Screenshot the cancellation and keep the confirmation email as proof in case you're billed again.
  5. Verify next cycle. Watch your statement on the next billing date to confirm no further charge appears.

Tips

  • If a charge slips through after cancelling, contact your bank with your proof and dispute it.
  • Review all subscriptions twice a year — most people are paying for at least one they forgot.
