WebP is the format you keep running into without choosing it. Google designed it to make web pages lighter, packing lossy and lossless compression plus transparency into a single file, and most sites now serve it automatically. The catch is that WebP's advantages are tied to the browser. The instant you save, email, upload, print, or edit one of these files elsewhere, you are relying on every other tool understanding a format that many were never built for. That gap between excellent browser support and patchy support everywhere else is the entire reason WEBP to PNG conversion exists.

PNG earns its place as the conversion target because it is the closest thing images have to a universal language. It is lossless, it has supported transparency for decades, and it opens cleanly in operating systems, office apps, marketplaces, and editors going back many years. What it cannot do is reverse-engineer detail that a lossy WebP already removed, so a soft or blocky WebP becomes a soft or blocky PNG. The most visible change is file size: the PNG will usually be several times larger, since it forgoes the compression that made WebP small in the first place.

Photoshop deserves a special mention because it is where many people first get stuck. Photoshop version 23.2 and newer can open and save WebP natively, but earlier versions need Google's free WebPShop plug-in installed first. If you cannot or do not want to fiddle with plug-ins, converting WebP to PNG sidesteps the problem entirely: a PNG opens in any Photoshop version, plus GIMP, Paint, and essentially every other editor. The same logic applies to phones, design platforms, and e-commerce backends that quietly reject WebP uploads.

A sensible workflow is to keep WebP for anything that lives on the web and convert to PNG only when a file is heading somewhere that needs it.
